About this property. The grade I listed mansion house, Burley on the Hill House, dates from 1694 to 1700. It is described by Pevsner (1960) as a palace, but is Palladian, albeit it predates by some twenty years the accepted start of the Palladian Revival. At first work was supervised Henry Dormer (d 1727); in 1697 he was replaced by John Lumley.

The 2nd Earl of Nottingham (1647-1730), Secretary of State 1689-93 and 1702-4, purchased an estate in Rutland from the 2nd Duke of Buckingham in 1694 and built Burley-on-the-Hill between 1694 and 1708.
